United States federal debt approaches $40 trillion milestone
The United States federal government is approaching a milestone as its national debt is projected to surpass $40 trillion. Recent legislative action by the U.S. Senate involving a stopgap spending bill has averted a government shutdown but has not included offsetting cuts to address the growing debt.
Over the last 18 years, federal debt has quadrupled. Factors cited for this increase include the costs of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, bank bailouts, the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, and $4.65 trillion in relief funds used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Currently, the federal government's annual spending is $7.25 trillion against revenues of $5.57 trillion. This creates a significant fiscal gap, with the national debt per taxpayer estimated at $359,252. While initiatives like the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have attempted to address fraud and spending, their impact on the overall debt remains limited.
