United States fiscal challenges involve $40 trillion debt and $2 trillion deficit

The United States faces significant fiscal challenges as it manages approximately $40 trillion in federal debt and a roughly $2 trillion budget deficit for the current fiscal year. Analysts suggest several paths to address the debt burden, including growing tax receipts through economic growth, cutting federal spending, utilizing inflation to reduce the debt's real value, or defaulting on obligations.

A report from the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB) indicates that reducing the federal deficit could improve affordability for American households by tempering inflation and lowering interest rates. The CRFB notes that while fiscal policy alone cannot solve all affordability issues, responsible fiscal policy can boost private investment and help prevent future insolvency risks for programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Conversely, the report warns that expansionary fiscal policies—such as subsidies or tax cuts financed by borrowing—may worsen affordability challenges by driving up inflation and interest rates.
