United States funds $40 million school meal program in Mozambique
The United States government has launched the ‘Nourish to Learn’ project in Mozambique’s Maputo Province, a $40 million initiative aimed at providing school meals to 170,000 children across 245 primary schools.
Funded through the USDA’s McGovern-Dole International Program, the project intends to distribute approximately 75 million meals by 2031. The initiative targets districts including Magude, Manhiça, Moamba, and Matutuíne. Beyond nutrition, the program includes health fairs, hygiene education, deworming, vitamin supplementation, and immunization for thousands of students. It also plans to install school gardens in 50 locations and rehabilitate kitchens and warehouses in 200 schools.
Implemented in partnership with Save the Children and coordinated with Mozambique’s National School Feeding Programme (PRONAE), the project seeks to improve school attendance, concentration, and long-term learning outcomes to support human capital development and economic growth.
