United States gains relative PISA ranking as global scores decline
Recent results from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) indicate that the United States has gained relative standing in international rankings. U.S. students currently score well above average in science and reading, while math scores have reached parity with other developed nations.
However, this improved ranking is largely attributed to a faster deterioration of scores in other countries rather than significant domestic gains. Data suggests that American students are learning less than in previous years, with math and reading scores sitting at or near their lowest levels.
The findings highlight a broader global decline in student achievement. Tracey Burns of the National Center on Education and the Economy noted that the pandemic appears to have a “long, long tail” affecting global scores. Experts expressed particular concern regarding declining reading proficiency due to its impact on civic participation and future success.
