United States Halloween destinations and national park folklore

Various U.S. locations are gaining attention for their connections to Halloween and local folklore. In Salem, Massachusetts, the 2026 holiday season is expected to feature month-long festivities, including a planned finale involving 400 drones. Other communities noted for their evocative names include Sleepy Hollow, New York, which offers lantern-lit cemetery walks, and Scarville, Iowa, named after a local merchant.

National parks also serve as significant sites for local legends. In Yellowstone National Park, the Old Faithful Inn, which opened in 1904, is the subject of various ghost stories, including a legend regarding a headless bride linked to a 1915 murder. Similar folklore exists in the Grand Canyon involving phantom hikers. These stories often blend historical facts with local mythology, fueled by the wilderness and historic structures found within the parks.
