United States Halloween statistics and safety advisories

As Halloween approaches, data and safety advisories highlight the scale and risks associated with the holiday in the United States. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that approximately 40 million children aged 5 to 14 are potential trick-or-treaters, with nearly 134 million occupied housing units serving as potential destinations.

The Census Bureau also noted the economic footprint of the holiday, including nearly 700 costume rental establishments and a massive confectionery workforce, with roughly 42,000 workers employed in chocolate and chocolate candy manufacturing.

In response to the holiday, the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection has issued safety guidance to prevent injuries. Citing the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the agency noted that an average of 3,600 Halloween-related injuries are treated in hospitals annually. Recommendations include using flame-resistant costume materials, ensuring proper mask ventilation, using battery-powered candles for decorations, and utilizing carving kits instead of kitchen knives for pumpkins.
