United States healthcare system faces cost and solvency challenges

The United States healthcare system is navigating complex issues regarding cost predictability and long-term financial sustainability. While the No Surprises Act, implemented in 2022, has successfully prevented many patients from receiving unexpected bills from out-of-network providers, some out-of-network providers are reportedly using the law to extract large payments from health plans. This trend is beginning to drive up coverage costs for both individuals and employers.

Additionally, discussions regarding national health insurance alternatives often overlook the complexities of existing models. For instance, more than half of Medicare recipients now utilize Medicare Advantage plans, where the government pays private insurers to manage benefits. Traditional Medicare also involves out-of-pocket costs such as premiums and deductibles, often necessitating supplemental Medigap insurance. Projections indicate a significant long-term solvency gap for Medicare, with estimated payments over the next 75 years exceeding revenues by approximately $60 trillion.
