United States highlights Gaza peace plan anniversary and lasting ceasefire
The United States government is marking the one-year anniversary of the peace plan for the Gaza Strip, signed in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, by highlighting what it describes as a “duradero” (lasting) ceasefire.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott credited U.S. mediation with the return of all hostages, both living and deceased, the establishment of a Peace Board, and the creation of a “Palestinian technocratic administration” to govern Gaza. The administration also noted an increase in humanitarian aid and a decrease in aid theft by Hamas.
The Trump administration stated these achievements are “only the beginning,” noting that the reconstruction of Gaza will be a difficult, multi-year process aimed at eliminating Hamas's presence to ensure genuine peace for Israel. The initial phase of the agreement, reached on October 9, 2025, included the release of hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli troops.
Since the ceasefire began on October 11, 2025, at least 1,470 Palestinians have died and over 5,180 have been injured. Since the start of the conflict on October 7, 2023, the death toll from Israeli fire has reached 74,377, a figure that international organizations and a UN commission have characterized as “genocidio” (genocide).
