United States household debt averages $104,755 as of 2025

Total U.S. household debt reached a record $18.8 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2025, according to the New York Federal Reserve. Across borrowers, Experian estimates the average American household carries $104,755 of total debt.

Mortgage balances account for roughly 70% of that total, about $13.17 trillion. The average credit‑card balance is $6,523 with an average APR of 19.57%, while the typical auto loan stands at $24,602 and new‑car payments average $748 per month. Student‑loan balances range between $37,400 and $43,300 per borrower. About 77% of Americans have some form of debt, and delinquency rates are the highest they have been since 2017, according to the Federal Reserve Board and the New York Fed.
