US drug transit report removes Venezuela from failure list FAST-MOVING
The United States government has released its annual determination for fiscal year 2027 regarding major drug transit and production countries. In a significant shift, the Trump administration removed Venezuela from the list of nations that have 'demonstrably failed' to meet international anti-narcotics obligations, citing increased cooperation with the interim government led by Delcy Rodriguez following the removal of Nicolas Maduro. However, Venezuela remains on the broader list of major drug transit and production countries.
The Department of State identified 23 countries as significant transit or production hubs, including Mexico, Honduras, Panama, and several nations in Southeast Asia and South America. While many countries remain on the transit list due to geographic and economic factors, the administration specifically designated Afghanistan, Bolivia, Myanmar, and Colombia as having failed to fulfill their international drug control commitments.
In contrast, the report highlighted El Salvador, Argentina, and Ecuador as key allies in the fight against narcotics and narcoterrorism. The administration also urged Canada and Mexico to intensify efforts to curb the flow of illicit substances, particularly fentanyl, into the United States.
