United States revokes over 300,000 visas under Trump administration

The U.S. State Department has announced that the Trump administration has revoked more than 300,000 visas since January 2025. This represents a significant acceleration in enforcement compared to an August 10 update, which reported over 175,000 revocations.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated that the administration maintains a “zero tolerance” policy for foreign nationals who violate laws, commit fraud, or threaten national security. Reported reasons for revocations include criminal activity, such as assault (25%) and driving under the influence (22%), as well as approximately 4,000 cases related to “birth tourism.”

The administration has also implemented stricter social media screening for visa applicants and increased fees for certain work visas. While the government defends these measures as necessary for domestic security, human rights advocates have raised concerns regarding due process, freedom of expression, and potential racial profiling, particularly following revocations linked to pro-Palestinian demonstrations and social media commentary.
