United States implements new voter ID and registration rules

Voters in various United States states face updated requirements and deadlines for the upcoming November 3 elections. Changes to identification and registration processes vary significantly by jurisdiction.

In New Hampshire, student IDs are no longer accepted as valid identification, as the state shifts priority toward government-issued documents. In South Dakota, first-time registrants must present specific identification in person, such as a driver's license or tribal ID, and provide documentation to prove citizenship. Failure to provide citizenship proof in South Dakota may result in voters being registered only for federal elections, preventing participation in state and local contests.

In San Diego County, California, residents wishing to receive a mail-in ballot must register by October 19. Those who miss the deadline may utilize conditional registration at the Voter Registration Office or designated polling centers. Eligible voters must be U.S. citizens, California residents, at least 18 years old, and meet specific legal criteria regarding felony convictions and mental competency.
