United States imposes 10 per cent tariff on Pakistani imports

The United States has implemented a 10 per cent tariff on imports from Pakistan under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. This measure, announced by the Office of the United States Trade Representative, targets Pakistan and 59 other economies accused of failing to effectively enforce restrictions on goods produced through forced labour.

Effective July 24, the tariff replaces a previous temporary global levy with a more durable legal framework. This shift increases compliance challenges for Pakistani exporters, who face heightened scrutiny regarding supply-chain practices, input origins, and labour-related import requirements. The move is expected to create uncertainty for Pakistan’s external trade outlook due to its high concentration of exports in the U.S. market.
