United States imposes coordinated tariffs on China and expands forced‑labor sanctions

The United States and the European Union announced a coordinated set of tariffs targeting Chinese technology, renewable‑energy products, batteries and semiconductors. Washington justified the measures as protecting national security and addressing unfair competition, while the EU introduced stricter rules on foreign subsidies. China described the actions as discriminatory and unilateral, warning it could retaliate with tariffs on U.S. and EU agricultural goods and restrictions on rare‑earth exports.

Separately, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the investigation into forced‑labor practices will conclude in weeks. The probe covers 60 economies, including the Dominican Republic, and could lead to Section 301 tariffs on goods deemed produced with forced labor. Greer referenced the 2025 Turnberry agreement with the EU, indicating that any EU tariffs will be considered within that framework.
