United States imposes sanctions on International Criminal Court

The Trump administration has implemented sweeping sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC), threatening to disconnect the tribunal from the global financial system. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the administration's goal is to force the ICC to end its investigations, remarking, “Either the ICC will end its threats, or we will end the ICC.”

The move follows the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to former ICC judge Navi Pillay. The administration's actions come as the court continues to investigate alleged war crimes, including a United Nations panel determination regarding Gaza. Critics have characterized the sanctions as an attempt to undermine international rule of law in response to the court's judicial functions.
