Abin warns of critical risk of US interference in Brazil's 2026 elections
The Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) has issued a confidential report warning of a 'critical level' of risk regarding potential United States interference in Brazil's 2026 elections. The report, which was sent to the Presidency, the Ministry of Justice, and the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), describes an escalation of pressure from the United States government under Donald Trump.
Abin suggests that Washington's strategy in Latin America aims to reaffirm US hegemony by reducing the influence of rival powers, particularly China, and securing control over strategic assets and natural resources. The agency notes that Brazil's pursuit of international autonomy has made it a target for economic, commercial, and diplomatic retaliation.
Finance Minister Dario Durigan has characterized US economic measures, including tariffs on Brazilian products, as a form of electoral interference designed to create negative sentiment toward President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The report also highlights the role of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, noting his actions may aim to influence the foreign policies of regional nations.
While the intelligence warnings are significant, members of the TSE have stated that they have not yet identified concrete evidence of external influence affecting the actual electoral process.
