United States inflation averages 3.9% in the 2020s

Post-pandemic inflation in the United States has averaged 3.9% during the 2020s, a rate significantly higher than the 2% target set by the Federal Reserve. Since January 2020, the official consumer price index has increased at an annualized rate of 4.0%, placing it 13% above the intended 2% inflation trend.

Economic analysts suggest that current inflationary pressures may increase due to the impact of conflict involving Iran on global energy, food, and commodity prices. While central bank officials, including former Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell, initially attributed inflation to temporary supply chain bottlenecks, the trend has since been recognized as accelerating and becoming permanent.

In response, central banks in the United States and the United Kingdom have utilized interest rate hikes to attempt to cool purchasing power. However, critics argue that conventional monetarist and Keynesian theories have failed to adequately explain or manage the current economic landscape.
