United States initiates trade negotiations over industrial robotics and food labeling
President Donald Trump has announced a new phase of trade negotiations aimed at addressing national security concerns and protecting domestic markets. Following a Department of Commerce investigation initiated in September 2025, the administration has identified potential threats to national security stemming from American dependence on foreign-produced industrial robotics and machinery.
Under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, the President has directed Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and the U.S. Trade Representative to negotiate with international partners. While no immediate tariffs have been imposed, the administration may implement duties, import quotas, or other charges if negotiations fail to reach satisfactory results. A report on progress is expected by April 2027.
In a separate commercial front, the United States is challenging the use of protected European food designations. The administration seeks to treat names such as Pecorino, Romano, Gorgonzola, and Parmesan as generic product types rather than protected regional identifiers. This strategy aims to allow American producers to use these names freely in international markets. This move specifically impacts the Sardinian economy, as the United States is the primary foreign market for Pecorino Romano DOP.
