United States escalates economic pressure campaign against Iran

The United States has escalated its economic campaign against Iran, with President Donald Trump describing the new phase of pressure as an ‘economic D-Day’. The strategy aims to achieve regime change through total economic strangulation without resorting to military conflict.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that any nation continuing to engage in significant financial or trade relations with Tehran will face severe consequences, stating that those who do not support this economic war will be viewed as being ‘against us’. Vice President JD Vance characterized economic pressure as the most effective tool currently available to the administration.

The campaign specifically targets major Iranian trading partners, including China, Turkey, and Iraq. China, the largest buyer of Iranian oil, faces significant pressure as it utilizes complex trade networks and non-dollar currencies to process Iranian petroleum exports. Additionally, the U.S. has announced new measures against Hezbollah due to its ties to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Iran's Foreign Ministry has condemned the move, labeling the U.S. actions as ‘economic terrorism’. Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to enforce a naval blockade on Iranian ports in the Gulf.
