United States intensifies Taiwan engagement via diplomacy and defense
Following a recent meeting between US and Chinese leadership, the United States has intensified its engagement with Taiwan through diplomatic, military, and educational initiatives.
In the diplomatic sphere, US Senator Michael Bennet and a delegation of House Representatives, including Brendan Boyle, Andrea Salinas, and Tim Kennedy, visited Taiwan to discuss regional security and strengthen bilateral ties. These visits coincided with Taiwan's National Day.
On the defense front, the first batch of two F-16V fighter jets arrived in Taiwan. Additionally, US defense firms AEVEX and Shield AI announced plans to collaborate with Taiwanese partners to produce military drones locally. The Pentagon is also expected to station two officials within Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense to assist with policy coordination and combat modeling through 2028.
Educational cooperation has also expanded, with a new memorandum of understanding between Taiwan and Alabama establishing a high-tech talent pipeline. This program will provide scholarships for Alabama students to study semiconductors, AI, and cybersecurity in Taiwan.
Other notable developments include former President Tsai Ing-wen's first visit to the US since leaving office to speak at Stanford University, and the FBI arrest of a Chinese national accused of monitoring the son of Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te.
