United States invests $180 million in mining workforce development
The United States is investing in its mining workforce to secure domestic mineral supply chains and compete with China. The Department of Energy has announced $100 million for 14 mining schools, aiming to double the number of graduates in mining, minerals, and related supply-chain fields.
Additionally, the Department of War has allocated $80 million for workforce development programs and technology innovation hubs at three schools. These funds are intended to train geologists, metallurgists, and mining engineers.
The initiative addresses a significant labor shortage; U.S. universities currently graduate approximately 200 mining engineers annually, whereas China graduates about 3,000. Beyond specialized engineers, the industry faces a shortage of skilled tradespeople, including electricians, pipefitters, mechanics, and welders.
