United States issues security alerts for Mozambique and Mexico

The United States Department of State has updated its travel advisory for Mozambique, maintaining a Level 2 “exercise increased caution” status for the country while elevating several northern regions to Level 4 “do not travel.” The highest warnings apply to Cabo Delgado province, the Niassa Special Reserve, and the districts of Memba and Eráti in Nampula province, due to active extremist groups capable of sudden attacks on public spaces, tourist sites, and remote luxury resorts. The city of Pemba is also noted as vulnerable.

In addition to terrorism risks, the advisory cites violent crime, social instability, and significant limitations in the public healthcare system, including medicine shortages.

Separately, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued a security alert for Mexicali, Baja California, regarding a “potential threat.” Following the alert, U.S. government activities in Mexicali were suspended. Local authorities in Baja California have announced reinforced security operations, including increased patrolling and surveillance, to protect residents and maintain order.
