United States issues travel advisory for northern Mozambique

The United States Department of State has issued a travel advisory urging American citizens to avoid traveling to northern Mozambique due to heightened risks of terrorism, crime, and civil unrest. While Mozambique as a whole is listed at Level 2, indicating a need for increased caution, the province of Cabo Delgado has been assigned a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning.

Authorities warn that terrorist groups remain active in the north and may target public areas, tourist destinations, and upscale lodges in remote areas with little to no warning, potentially taking hostages. The city of Pemba is noted as particularly vulnerable. Additionally, the U.S. advises against travel to the Niassa Special Reserve and certain districts within Nampula province, including Memba and Eráti.

Beyond security concerns, the advisory highlights weaknesses in Mozambique’s health infrastructure, noting that medical supplies are often in short supply and facilities may lack basic resources. The document also warns of the possibility of unplanned protests that could turn violent and block major roads or border crossings.
