United States leads global corn production despite low fresh consumption

The United States is the world's largest corn producer, accounting for over 30% of global production. According to the USDA, the U.S. produced 389.7 million tons during the 2023-2024 season, surpassing China's output of approximately 288 million tons.

Despite this massive production, corn is rarely consumed as boiled whole ears in the U.S., unlike in countries such as Vietnam. This discrepancy is primarily due to the types of corn grown. Over 99% of U.S. corn is Dent corn, which features hard kernels, thick hulls, and complex starches with very little free sugar, making it unsuitable for boiling and eating directly. In contrast, Sweet corn, which is high in sugar and suitable for fresh consumption, accounts for less than 1% of total U.S. production.
