United States Leads Global Satellite Count as New Radar Monitors Space Debris

In 2025 the United States maintains the largest orbital fleet with over 12,000 satellites, dominated by SpaceX’s Starlink constellation, while China’s constellation has grown to about 1,370 satellites and the United Kingdom surpassed 700 satellites. Russia’s GLONASS system contributes more than 370 satellites to the total.

A multinational research team demonstrated a new space‑domain awareness system in September 2025, linking the 76‑metre Lovell Telescope in England with radio antennae in Australia and the United States. The system successfully tracked 20 rocket bodies, measuring rotation, dimensions and mass distribution to improve space‑debris monitoring and collision avoidance.

The combined data highlight the accelerating congestion of Earth’s orbit and the emerging capabilities for tracking and managing space traffic.
