United States lifts sanctions on Belarusian airline Belavia
The United States Department of Commerce has reportedly granted Boeing a license to resume full cooperation with the Belarusian national carrier, Belavia. This decision allows the airline to directly purchase aircraft software, parts, and potentially new planes from the American manufacturer.
According to Belarusian state news agency BelTA and statements from Valentin Rybakov, the Belarusian representative to the United Nations, the move follows a series of diplomatic shifts. This includes a September meeting between Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and US Special Envoy John Cole, as well as previous decisions by the US Department of the Treasury to allow intermediaries to trade in US-made passenger aircraft parts.
Belavia has faced significant restrictions since 2021 following the diversion of a Ryanair flight into Belarusian airspace. The airline currently operates a fleet of 16 aircraft, including nine older Boeing models, several Airbus A330s, and Embraer jets.
