United States LNG accounts for 93% of global export growth in 2025, Energy Institute reports

The Energy Institute’s 2026 Statistical Review shows global LNG trade expanded by 33 billion cubic metres (bcm) in 2025, with U.S. exporters supplying 31 bcm – 93 percent of the increase. The United States exported roughly one‑third more LNG than Qatar, its nearest rival, and finished the year as a net exporter of both gas and oil.

In 2025 the U.S. remained the world’s largest oil producer at about 21 million barrels per day (≈21 % of global output) and produced 1,074 bcm of natural gas (≈25.6 % of global production), comparable to the combined output of Russia, Iran and China. EI President Andy Brown highlighted energy’s central role in geopolitics and the market, while EI chief executive Nick Wayth noted that 88 % of U.S. energy growth that year was driven by fossil fuels. The findings were discussed in a July 29 webinar hosted by Rice University’s Baker Institute.
