Algeria becomes Spain's leading gas supplier, overtaking the United States

Algeria supplied 33.9% of Spain's gas imports in the first half of 2026, surpassing the United States, which fell to 29.4%, and making Algeria the main supplier. The increase was driven by the Medgaz pipeline and higher‑cost Algerian LNG shipments, with June deliveries rising to 40.3% (10,460 GWh). Russia remained the third‑largest source at 19.7%, ahead of Nigeria and Angola, while the United States lost its previous dominance.

The shift reflects price advantages of the direct Mediterranean pipeline over U.S. liquefied natural gas, as well as broader European efforts to secure stable energy supplies amid volatile markets and geopolitical tensions. Overall gas demand in Spain dropped 6.7% year‑on‑year in June, with lower consumption for electricity generation contributing to the decline.
