United States may act as intermediary for Russian gas to EU
Reports indicate that the United States may seek to act as an intermediary for Russian gas flowing into the European Union. While no official plan has been confirmed, diplomatic and industrial sources suggest that Washington could potentially acquire interests in energy infrastructure, such as Baltic pipelines or the Ukrainian network, to facilitate the resale of Russian gas to European consumers.
Such an arrangement would allow Moscow to regain a portion of the European market through a politically acceptable Western intermediary. Discussions regarding the reopening of gas flows and American participation in infrastructure have been noted, including interest from the American fund Elliott in Bulgarian energy networks.
In response to inquiries regarding these developments, the European Commission has emphasized the necessity of diversifying energy imports from suppliers such as the United States, Norway, and Algeria, rather than addressing specific claims of American control over Russian transit routes.
