Measles cases surge across the Americas and reach 35-year high in the U.S

The Americas are facing a significant measles resurgence, with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reporting 55,792 confirmed cases and 77 deaths between January 4 and October 3, 2026. This represents a 4.8-fold increase compared to the same period in 2025. Guatemala and Mexico report the highest case counts, while the United States, Peru, and Canada account for 99.5% of the region's total infections.

In the United States, the outbreak has reached a 35-year high, with the CDC confirming approximately 4,080 cases. Pennsylvania has been heavily impacted, reporting over 1,000 cases and five deaths. In response to rising infections, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a statewide disaster emergency on October 5, 2026, following 108 confirmed cases in the state.

Health officials warn that upcoming religious mass gatherings in South America, particularly in Argentina, Peru, and Uruguay, pose a high risk for further transmission due to increased travel and population density. Experts attribute the surge to declining vaccination coverage and the spread of misinformation, which has eroded public trust in immunization programs.
