United States midterm elections face legal and political scrutiny

The upcoming 2026 midterm elections in the United States are approaching, with voters set to elect all 435 members of the House of Representatives, 35 of the 100 Senate seats, and governors in 36 states. The results will determine whether the Republican Party maintains its narrow majority in Congress or if the Democratic Party can regain control to increase pressure on the Trump administration.

In a significant legal development, Democratic groups and leaders have filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Homeland Security. The lawsuit, filed in a Washington, D.C. District Court, alleges that the administration is illegally interfering in the election process by pressuring states to remove voters from registration lists based on suspected non-citizenship. The plaintiffs argue that the executive branch lacks the authority to oversee state voter lists or override state determinations of voter eligibility.

In response, the Department of Justice stated that ensuring election integrity is a top priority and that all actions are based on law to ensure only eligible citizens vote. Meanwhile, the White House has criticized the legal action, characterizing the measures as standard election security procedures.
