United States Mint releases commemorative Trump $1 coin
The United States Mint has released a commemorative $1 coin featuring the portrait of President Donald Trump as part of the nation’s Semiquincentennial celebrations marking 250 years of independence in 2026. The release triggered overwhelming demand, with online stocks selling out within hours and customers facing long virtual wait times.
The coin is produced in Philadelphia using a copper, zinc, manganese, and nickel alloy that provides a golden appearance without containing actual gold. The obverse features Trump’s profile alongside the inscriptions ‘LIBERTY’, ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’, and the dates ‘1776 ~ 2026’. The reverse displays the Great Seal of the United States, featuring an eagle, an olive branch, and arrows.
While federal law generally prohibits the depiction of living persons on official currency, this issue was authorized under specific legislation governing special commemorative coins for the 250th anniversary. The Mint offered the coins in rolls of 25 for $61 and bags of 100 for $154.50. A limited run of 250,000 coins struck on July 4th includes a special privy mark for collectors.
The release has drawn mixed reactions, ranging from collector enthusiasm to public criticism regarding the artistic depiction of the President’s features.
