US Shifts Routine Visa Processing from Abuja to Lagos, Expands African Regional Hubs
The U.S. Department of State announced a continent‑wide realignment of visa operations, ending routine visa services at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, on 1 August 2026. Nigerian citizens and residents must now schedule appointments and pay fees at the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, the designated regional hub.
The restructuring designates 20 African cities as visa processing hubs, including Lagos, Nairobi, Accra, Addis Ababa, Cape Town, Dakar, Dar es Salaam, Djibouti, Johannesburg, Kampala, Kigali, Kinshasa, Lomé, Luanda, Malabo, Monrovia, Port Louis, Praia and Yaoundé. Similar changes affect other countries; for example, Guinea will route non‑immigrant visa applications to the U.S. Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, from the same date.
In a separate advisory, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria warned that passport or visa photographs altered with artificial‑intelligence or digital editing tools will be rejected and may cause significant processing delays. Photos must be recent (taken within the past six months) and accurately reflect the applicant’s appearance to satisfy TSA and CBP verification requirements.
