United States negotiates new military bases in Greenland with Denmark

The United States is holding high‑level, secret negotiations with Denmark to expand its military presence on Greenland. The draft agreement calls for at least three new bases on the island’s southern region, with one possible location at the former U.S. airfield in Narsarsuaq. A source said the United States has even suggested that the new sites be formally designated as U.S. sovereign territory.

The bases would be aimed at monitoring Russian and Chinese naval activity in the GIUK gap between Greenland, Iceland and the United Kingdom. The talks follow former President Donald Trump’s claim that the United States should “own” Greenland to prevent Russian or Chinese acquisition. Denmark’s foreign ministry has confirmed that discussions are ongoing, but no final agreement has been reached and the exact number and placement of the bases could still change.
