United States and Ukraine negotiate Patriot missile production license
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has confirmed that Washington and Kyiv are currently negotiating a license that would allow Ukraine to manufacture Patriot air defense interceptor missiles. While the move aims to bolster Ukraine's long-term defense capabilities against Russian attacks, Rubio emphasized that this is not an immediate solution to the country's acute shortage of interceptors.
Establishing domestic production would require several years to build the necessary specialized factories and assembly lines for such sophisticated weaponry. Rubio noted that air interceptors have become a top global defense priority, with high demand from various regions, including the Middle East. He stressed that the United States must prioritize its own defense requirements and ensure its stockpiles remain sufficient before increasing external deliveries.
Ukrainian officials, including Kyrylo Budanov, have indicated that while deliveries continue, Ukraine is expected to receive fewer Patriot missiles in 2026 compared to 2025. The proposal for licensed production follows discussions between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump in July, though Trump previously cautioned that the U.S. must be extremely careful before authorizing the production of such sensitive military technology.
