United States: New trend of oral caffeine and vitamin pouches emerges

A new trend is emerging in the United States where individuals are using small pouches containing caffeine, vitamins, or melatonin placed between the lip and gum. Inspired by the popularity of nicotine products like Zyn, these pouches are marketed as convenient alternatives to coffee or energy drinks, requiring no water or swallowing.

Health experts and the FDA have raised concerns regarding the ease of overconsumption. While some pouches contain between 20 and 50 milligrams of caffeine, others can contain up to 200 milligrams. This makes it difficult for users to track their total daily intake, potentially leading to side effects such as heart palpitations, anxiety, tremors, and sleep disturbances.

Nutritionists also note that frequent caffeine use can lead to tolerance, where the substance no longer provides a boost but instead becomes a necessity to function normally. Experts suggest that caffeine merely masks fatigue signals rather than providing actual energy, and advise limiting intake to avoid disrupting sleep cycles.
