United States oil supply claims debunked

Claims circulating on social media that the United States has only 14 days of oil remaining are misleading due to a mismatch in how data is being compared. The viral calculation compares the roughly 286.6 million barrels held in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) against the nation's total daily petroleum product consumption of approximately 20.7 million barrels.

This comparison is inaccurate because the SPR contains crude oil, whereas the daily consumption figure represents a broad range of petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Furthermore, the SPR is intended as an emergency backup rather than the primary source of the nation's energy supply.

The U.S. petroleum system relies on multiple layers of supply. According to Energy Information Administration data, the country produces approximately 13.9 million barrels of crude oil per day and maintains roughly 424.5 million barrels in commercial crude inventories. Additionally, refineries process about 17.5 million barrels per day, supplemented by ongoing imports and exports.
