U.S. Delays Large-Scale Attack on Iran Over Dwindling Missile Interceptor Stocks

President Donald Trump announced that the United States is postponing a major offensive against the Islamic Republic of Iran. The decision was made after senior advisers warned that the Pentagon’s inventory of Patriot interceptor missiles and other air‑defence ammunition is dangerously low, a shortage that could cripple U.S. forces stationed in the Gulf region.

The pause comes after roughly 13 days of reciprocal strikes, during which U.S. forces carried out a series of retaliatory attacks and Iranian forces responded with missile launches that killed three American soldiers in Jordan. Iranian brigade‑general Mohammad Akraminia said Iran has also halted its attacks on U.S. assets in response to the U.S. suspension.

U.S. officials, including General Dan Caine, Vice‑President JD Vance and other senior military leaders, met with Trump at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey (July 7‑8, 2026) and urged restraint until the missile shortage is addressed. While Trump affirmed that the United States remains “locked and loaded” and could raise the level of its campaign if necessary, the immediate escalation has been put on hold pending diplomatic efforts.
