United States plans $500 million military project in Palau

The United States is planning a $500 million military infrastructure project in Palau, located in the Pacific Ocean near the South China Sea. The investment involves a comprehensive renovation of a coastline originally built by Japan during World War II to facilitate use by the U.S. Navy.

The project includes the construction of a 10,000-square-meter restricted-access warehouse for storing maritime equipment and Marine Corps supplies. Additionally, plans involve preparing sites for military radar and expanding a remote airfield to accommodate heavy aircraft.

The development has sparked significant concern among Palau's 17,000 residents, who have petitioned Washington expressing fears that the increased military presence could make the islands a target in regional conflicts. Environmental organizations have also warned that the construction may threaten the archipelago's delicate marine ecosystems.
