United States political parties navigate post-Trump landscape

The Republican and Democratic parties in the United States are navigating a shifting political landscape following the era of Donald Trump. Historically, the two parties emerged from the same mid-19th-century political tradition, with their primary divisions rooted in the Civil War and Reconstruction eras regarding slavery and segregation laws.

Over the last century, party alignments shifted significantly. The Democratic Party's support for civil rights under leaders like Kennedy and Johnson led to a realignment where many Southern states moved toward the Republican Party.

The modern Republican Party has evolved from its original liberal roots toward a more right-wing, neoliberal platform. This shift, combined with recent populism, facilitated the rise of Donald Trump, who attracted support from the middle class and workers affected by deindustrialization. Key pillars of the current Republican platform include support for the arms industry, fossil fuel exploitation, tax cuts for the wealthy, and reduced state intervention in welfare, alongside a focus on conservative religious and patriotic values.
