United States prepares first Belarusian potash shipment in four years
The United States is set to receive its first shipment of Belarusian potash in four years. A 30,000-tonne shipment is expected to arrive at the Port of New Orleans following Washington’s decision in March to lift sanctions on major Belarusian potash producers.
President Donald Trump is seeking cheaper fertilizer for American farmers to mitigate rising costs caused by the Iran war and a trade dispute with Canada. While Canada currently provides nearly 80 percent of US potash imports, the US is exploring larger agreements with Belarus to secure prices significantly lower than those offered by Canadian suppliers.
Potash is a critical potassium-rich mineral used in the cultivation of essential crops like corn and soybeans. Although this shipment represents only a small portion of the 5.6 million tonnes of potash imported by the US last year, it indicates a potential shift in trade relations between Washington and Minsk.
