United States pressures allies to choose sides in AI rivalry with China
The United States is preparing to demand that partner nations choose between U.S.-led and Chinese-led artificial intelligence frameworks. According to an internal State Department draft, countries that participate in Beijing’s competing initiatives may be excluded from the U.S. Pax Silica coalition, which focuses on securing supply chains for semiconductors, critical minerals, and AI models.
Kazakhstan is currently the only nation known to have joined both the Pax Silica initiative and China’s rival World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization. Other members of the U.S. framework include Japan, Australia, and South Korea.
In a separate development regarding AI architecture, Republican Senator Jim Banks has urged the Trump administration to incentivize the domestic development of open-weight AI models. Banks expressed concern that the proliferation of Chinese open-weight models could pose security risks and requested that the U.S. government limit the ability of Chinese firms to use American semiconductors to build such products.
