United States urges NATO allies to dismantle the International Criminal Court
The United States is pressuring NATO allies to assist in the systematic dismantling of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and to withdraw from the Rome Statute. According to reports citing anonymous NATO diplomats, U.S. envoy Matthew Whitaker delivered this demand during a closed-door meeting with 32 ambassadors in Brussels in mid-July.
Accompanying his remarks, the U.S. mission distributed an official document requesting that allies immediately halt all material support for the ICC and publicly denounce its mandate as an overreach. The document also urged member states to evaluate the court as a threat to their own national sovereignty.
This diplomatic offensive follows a broader campaign announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio to isolate the ICC. The administration's actions are reportedly aimed at shielding U.S. officials and Israeli leaders from potential war crimes prosecutions. This move comes amid existing tensions, as the U.S. has previously taken steps to withdraw from other international agreements, such as the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization.
