United States pressures South Korea over Hormuz Strait and Ukraine aid

The United States administration is increasing pressure on South Korea to contribute resources and military assets to ensure maritime security in the Hormuz Strait. White House officials noted that South Korea is a major importer of Middle Eastern oil and stated they are “still waiting for South Korea to deploy resources to the region.” The U.S. Department of Defense echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for allies to support the freedom of navigation in the strait.

In response, the South Korean government is reviewing practical contribution methods, including the possibility of military deployment, provided it does not compromise the nation's readiness for threats on the Korean Peninsula.

Further complicating the bilateral dynamic, President Donald Trump shared a column on social media suggesting that South Korea should be pressured to sell its Cheongung-II (M-SAM II) missile systems to Ukraine. The column argues that such a move would help alleviate the burden on the U.S. to provide interceptors and serve as a way for South Korea to prove itself as a reliable ally.
