US peace plan for Ukraine proposes EU membership instead of NATO

The United States is reportedly preparing a new peace plan to end the war in Ukraine, according to reports from The Economist. The proposal suggests that Ukraine would renounce its aspirations for NATO membership in exchange for an investment package and a pathway toward European Union membership.

Key components of the plan include the establishment of a demilitarized zone in the Donbas region and the potential reactivation of the Nord Stream gas pipelines to restore Russian natural gas supplies to Europe. For Russia, the plan offers the possibility of normalizing political relations with Washington, easing economic sanctions, and entering into business agreements with American companies.

Ukrainian officials have expressed concern that such negotiations might benefit Moscow before a formal end to the conflict is reached. Additionally, the proposal regarding Russian gas remains controversial, as restarting Nord Stream would likely conflict with existing European Union legislation. Neither Kyiv nor Washington has officially confirmed the acceptance of these terms.
