United States proposes lower fuel efficiency standards to reduce car costs

The United States government is preparing to lower fuel efficiency and consumption targets to reduce vehicle manufacturing costs. Under the proposed SAFE III regulation, which covers model years 2022 through 2031, the administration aims to make cars simpler and cheaper to produce.

Preliminary assessments by the NHTSA suggest that these changes could reduce the added technological cost per vehicle by approximately 44%, potentially saving buyers around $930. However, this shift comes with significant environmental implications. Projections indicate that the move could lead to the consumption of an additional 360 billion liters of gasoline through 2050.

The proposed changes would allow manufacturers to invest less in hybrid technology, aerodynamics, and weight reduction. While the government estimates consumer savings, it remains uncertain whether manufacturers will pass these cost reductions to customers or utilize them to increase profit margins.
