United States provides firefighting aid to Colombia

The United States Embassy in Bogotá has announced US$48,000 in specialized equipment to assist Colombia in combating widespread forest fires. Presented by Hugo Guevara, the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires, the aid is designated for the departments of Tolima and Nariño, as well as the municipality of Vijes and the firefighters of Yumbo in Valle del Cauca.

The assistance package includes tools for ground-based firefighting operations, such as blowers, fire extinction backpacks, chainsaws, fire beaters, brush cutters, machetes, rakes, and shovels.

According to the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), 19 active forest fires have been reported across six departments. Tolima is the most heavily affected region, accounting for 11 active fires, followed by Nariño with four. Other active fires have been reported in Valle del Cauca, Cundinamarca, Caldas, and Antioquia. In Tolima, Governor Adriana Magali Matizha has described the situation as an environmental, economic, and social emergency, noting that authorities are investigating whether some fires were started deliberately.
