United States donates anti-riot gear to Bolivia amid protest threats

The United States has delivered anti-riot equipment, including tear gas and protective gear, to the Bolivian police in La Paz. This donation comes as supporters of former president Evo Morales prepare for new mass demonstrations scheduled for next week.

The protests are aimed at the government's decision to eliminate diesel subsidies. The centright administration of President Rodrigo Paz, which joined the 'Shield of the Americas' regional alliance in March, is seeking closer ties with Washington.

Matthew Zamary, director of the US International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) office in Bolivia, stated that the US rejects violent blockades as a substitute for democratic decisions. Bolivia has remained under a state of exception since June following previous economic protests that paralyzed the country for 53 days. Meanwhile, Evo Morales remains in the Chapare region facing two arrest warrants, which he denies.
