United States public dissatisfaction drives interest in Canadian citizenship
Public sentiment in the United States shows significant dissatisfaction, with an AP-NORC survey indicating that 72% of American adults believe the country is heading in the wrong direction. Confidence in leadership is low, with 48% lacking confidence in the executive branch and 53% in Congress. Additionally, Gallup's 2025 World Poll found that approximately one in five Americans would like to move abroad permanently, a figure rising to 40% among women aged 15 to 44.
This dissatisfaction coincides with an increase in Americans seeking Canadian citizenship by descent. Following the implementation of Bill C-3 on December 15, 2025, which removed the first-generation limit for citizenship by descent, the number of applicants has grown. The process allows individuals with an unbroken line to a Canadian ancestor to claim citizenship status, though wait times for citizenship certificates have increased to nearly three years.
