United States public trust in government information and election certification declines

A new poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and USAFacts reveals a decline in American trust regarding federal government information and election certifications. Only 34% of U.S. adults report having “a great deal” or “quite a bit” of trust in the government certification of election results, a decrease from 40% in 2024.

The erosion of confidence is notably partisan. Among Democrats, trust in election certifications dropped from 65% two years ago to 44%. Republican confidence in the process stands at 29%, a slight increase from 2024. Additionally, nearly half of U.S. adults expressed concern that the federal government might attempt to discredit results, tamper with outcomes, or pressure state officials.

Broader skepticism extends to various federal domains. Approximately 60% of Americans report having little to no trust in federal information regarding the environment, foreign affairs, elections, politics, abortion, and immigration.
